MINDFUL EATING

MINDFUL EATING

MY HEALTH JOURNEY

*Please note I am not giving professional medical advice. Also, this may be a sensitive topic to some readers. *

As I continue on the discussion of ‘My Health Journey,’ a new section on my blog, this month I want to talk about ‘Mindful Eating.” This subject is so important to me because I have had to make some important changes to my daily meals. I am currently still on this journey because there are certain foods that have become harder to eat and digest. As I share my personal health journey I believed it will encourage others.

Learning to eat differently can be very difficult. I have come to realize there are things we enjoy eating and may not be mindful to them at all. Whether it is a nice glass of milk with some hot chocolate chip cookies, to meatloaf with gravy, veggies and mashed potatoes or even a Sicilian slice of pizza; these things can actually hurt someone who has dietary sensitivities. That’s why I wanted to write about mindful eating.

You see, over the last few years, I begun to suffer terribly from gastro issues and I was not sure what the causes were. So before food became totally an enemy (lol); I knew I had to do something to find out what was going on with my body. Why was food hurting me so much? It was getting to the place that no matter what I ate, I felt so sick. After getting medical treatment and taking several tests, I found out I had specific things happening that would cause me to decide that I needed to make mindful dietary changes.

What I did next is something I would recommend for so many. I researched and saw there were important changes I needed to make to my diet. I also saw the importance of specific vitamins and minerals I was lacking. I made a food journal where I paid attention to how I felt without dairy, wheat and other specific foods. I informed myself on how to manage what was going on in my gut. This has taken so much discipline and extra work but has made an extreme positive difference.

As I said earlier, I continue to learn what foods impact me and what foods do not. Sometimes I have found that taking a break from specific foods and then slowly reintroducing them has been very beneficial as well. However there are some foods that I have realized that I cannot have at all any more. It is just too painful and makes me very sick. For me, this mindful eating has resulted in a healthier lifestyle and caused me to be aware of my body. My body was telling me to make some necessary changes.

I will continue this discussion on another blog. For now, let me hear your thoughts. Have you had to make mindful eating changes to your diet? If so, share your story. Food is not our enemy but it can feel that way, when you do not feel well. Creating better eating habits that affect your overall health is so worth it. I have experienced what “Mindful Eating,” can do on a such a positive level. You have to look at the dietary changes as necessary. It is not a diet but a necessary beneficial health lifestyle change. Now food becomes your source for health.
