Procrastination

Procrastination

Here we are approaching the ending of another year and it is a great time to consider have you procrastinated again on some things. Have you allowed yourself to question whether you are capable of achieving these things (fill in the blanks)? Have you allowed others’ opinions of you to cause you to reconsider your choices? Do you constantly question what if I make a mistake or look foolishly doing this? When you are honest about these things and perhaps some things I have not listed here, you then can get through each accordingly. Let’s take a moment to discuss procrastination.

I must admit, there are definitely some things I have assumed were just too hard to even try, even if I wanted to. I believe you may have felt the same, if you were honest. We don’t want to mess up trying. We don’t want to look foolish. We definitely don’t want to do something that would not work out well for us. So, what do we do, for the most part many of us, can overthink these things and put off what we should at least try. We really won’t know what could be the outcome unless we tried.

We must get to the place in our own lives where we understand that we will make mistakes sometimes when we try something different. Wisdom would be that we researched, inquired of other’s experiences and prayed about it before doing so. Even with all these things, if you make a mistake along the way, it is a matter of learning from it, recognizing where you messed up or missed it and choose to keep going forward.

It’s funny how some things that seem so different and maybe difficult to do, could become the easiest things we experience. I remember being in my early twenties when I really desired to drive and didn’t have my license yet and I chose to take driving lessons. I lived in New York at the time and those streets are extremely busy. You have to be aggressive honestly. During my first lesson, the instructor told me to jump on a nearby highway with speeds of 65 mph. I was extremely overwhelmed and terrified, praying and asking God to please help me not to have an accident. The instructor kept me calm and kept saying, “Look you are doing it!” I then in that moment laughed to myself and said, “what you thought seemed too difficult, now you are the one behind the wheel doing it too.” God is so good and encourages us at just the right time. My entire perspective changed.

I encourage you, if you have been too afraid to step out into that dream, desire, new place, etc.; take this moment to pray and ask God for a new perspective on it and an ability to step outside of your comfort zones. Obviously, this is not about being foolish but rather after praying and searching out these things that you are ready to launch out deeper still. Take this moment before 2019 and decide I will not procrastinate any longer. If it is God’s will for me to do this thing, I will, with His help and strength. Even if I make a mistake along the way, I will keep going and learn from any misstep.

Would you take a moment to share your story? Every time you do, you are bringing encouragement to others. Your stories can change others lives too.
