Through dynamic characters and compelling storylines, the brand offers a fresh perspective in the comic space—connecting with readers who value both creativity and messages that encourage and empower.
Today, let’s take a moment to learn more about Ralph Miley (New Creation Comics/CCAS President) and the mission behind this impactful work.
New Creation Comics Interview
1. Can you share the story behind New Creation Comics and what inspired you to create this brand?
Both the Christian Comic Arts Society (CCAS) and New Creation Comics were founded by Don Ensign. CCAS began in 1984, followed by New Creation Comics in 1998. After Don Ensign’s passing in 2014, the CCAS board has continued to carry forward his vision—maintaining a Christian presence at comic book conventions throughout Southern California and creating a space where Christians in pop culture can connect.
Today, Kevin Yong and I continue to publish graphic novels under the New Creation Comics imprint, building on that original foundation and purpose.
2. For those who may be new to your work, how would you describe the mission and message behind your comics?
The mission of CCAS is to share the Christian faith within the pop culture community while building a supportive environment where believers can fellowship, network, and collaborate. It is about loving God, loving others, and pursuing creativity with purpose.
New Creation Comics exists to communicate the message of the Gospel of Jesus Christ through the comic book medium. Our goal is to present a Biblical worldview through art, glorify God, encourage the body of Christ, and share God’s love with those who may not yet know Him.
3. What are some unique aspects of creating faith-based or purpose-driven comics that people might not immediately recognize?
One common misconception—both within secular and Christian audiences—is that faith-based comics are limited to strictly Biblical or historical storytelling. In reality, Christian creators are not confined to one genre.
Faith-driven storytelling can span science fiction, fantasy, and even elements of horror. This creative freedom allows us to reach diverse audiences in ways that are both imaginative and meaningful.
4. What challenges have you encountered in building New Creation Comics, and how have those experiences shaped your journey?
One of the primary challenges for both CCAS and New Creation Comics has been financial—particularly when it comes to maintaining a presence at various comic conventions.
Despite these challenges, we have consistently seen God provide opportunities and resources. These experiences have strengthened our faith and reinforced our commitment to sharing the Gospel wherever doors are opened.
5. Looking ahead, what upcoming projects, collaborations, or goals are you most excited about, and how do you hope to expand your impact?
For CCAS, our goal is to continue maintaining a presence at major conventions such as San Diego Comic-Con and WonderCon in Anaheim, while also expanding into smaller venues like libraries and churches. We aim to highlight creative projects from both major and independent publishers in these spaces.
For New Creation Comics, we are focused on continuing to publish graphic novels that present a Biblical worldview while reaching audiences who may not realize the breadth and creativity that exists within Christian comics.
Closing Thoughts
This conversation with Ralph Miley offers a powerful reminder that creativity and faith can work hand in hand to reach audiences in impactful and unexpected ways. New Creation Comics continues to break boundaries within the comic industry by blending storytelling with purpose—demonstrating that faith-based content is not limited, but expansive, imaginative, and relevant.
As they continue to grow their presence in both large conventions and local communities, their mission remains clear: to inspire, connect, and share hope through the art of storytelling. For readers and creators alike, New Creation Comics stands as an encouraging example of what it means to use your gifts with intention, excellence, and unwavering faith.
The Christian Comic Arts Society (CCAS) was founded in 1984 and has spent decades building community among Christians working in or engaging with comics, graphic novels, and related creative fields. Through convention programming, networking, creator support, and public discussion, CCAS continues to explore how faith and pop culture intersect.
