Once again, I was honored to attend this year’s Her Universe Fashion Show 2024 at Comic Con International. The experience was immersive from the moment I arrived. Walking up to the waiting line at the Manchester Grand Hyatt hotel in the Harbor Ballroom, I was immediately greeted by a variety of Mattel’s Polly Pocket displays celebrating 35 years. There were numerous photo ops to choose from and enjoy.
The abundance of pink everywhere was delightful. The opening was breathtaking, with Ashley in an oversized Barbie box showcasing an array of different outfits Barbie would wear. Her Universe is celebrating 10 years of Geek Couture with first-of-a-kind looks, along with a beautiful fashion show experience. Ashley and her childhood friend, Broadway star Michael James Scott, returned to co-host and did an incredible job once again together. They were so much fun, appearing at various times in different Barbie and Ken styles from over the years, uno cards and more.
Although Ashley had some costume fashion mishaps, she handled herself with incredible poise and professionalism. She brought such encouragement throughout the show, emphasizing how life can have its ups and downs and that nothing is ever really perfect. I loved when Ashley said, “If you trip, slip, if you fall apart, you pick yourself back up again.” It was incredibly generous of Mattel to give every member in the audience a Barbie. Mattel also had other giveaways, which Ashley distributed throughout the show via a lottery.
Each contestant did a wonderful job this year. However, I was especially thrilled to see Wes Jenkins, who I voted for, win this year. Wes Jenkins was chosen by the judges for his “Barbie-inspired creation.” Candice Miller was the audience favorite for her “Warrior Princess of Dune.”
Overall, the Her Universe Fashion Show 2024 was an unforgettable experience. The creativity, talent, and enthusiasm were evident in every aspect of the event. I’m already looking forward to next year’s show and can’t wait to see what incredible designs will be showcased. If you ever have the chance to attend, I highly recommend it – it’s a celebration of fashion, fandom, and fun that you won’t want to miss.
