With so many feeling overwhelmed with their schedules, it may be difficult at times to find time for self-care. You must be intentional when it comes to practicing self-care and well-being so you do not put yourself at risk for burnout. Let’s take a moment together to discuss, “Self-care moments necessary to maintain health and well-being.”
When it comes to self-care, this will include your mental, emotional, physical, social and spiritual health. The amount that we each may need can vary. The important part is implementation in order to stay strong in each aspect of our health.
I like to tell others, ‘Do not think you are being selfish when it comes to implementing self-care moments.’ Caring for yourself is a healthy habit. Knowing this, we must make self-care moments a priority and not wait for potential warning signs of deficits in any area. Do not allow self-care to be put on the back burner, rather decide you will keep a proper balance in your health. If you need accountability in any area, please find someone who will encourage and challenge you to maintain self-care and keep it on the top of your to-do list.
It is unfortunate how many, (including myself I must admit) can be made to feel guilty for prioritizing self-care. But you must learn that you cannot be all things to all people and some may not understand when you have to say, “No.” In order to remain productive, avoid possible burnout, bouts of depression, anxiety, resentment and other negative impacts, you must keep the care you give yourself a top priority.
The key to self-care is making it part of your daily routine. Being physical can help with things such as heart disease, stroke or even cancers to name a few. Maintaining spiritual health helps to bring peace, comfort, love and a deeper sense of your purpose in life. When it comes to your emotional and mental health, self-care routines can help reduce or may even eliminate anxiety, depression, and stress. It can minimize frustration and anger, and bring an increase in happiness. You will also experience an improvement in energy, concentration and better healthy relationships.
We must keep in mind that bouts of exhaustion caused by prolonged periods of stress can impact your physical, mental and emotional health too. However, when you are staying proactive in your self-care, you can avoid burnout during these moments. We must also keep in mind the necessity for proper nutrition, physical activity, and sleep.
Now let’s take a quick look at some examples of self-care:
-Emotional: take moments to talk with someone, journal, read, listen to music, work out, take a walk, watch a movie or tv show/series you enjoy, cry it out if necessary, receive and/or give a hug from someone you love and trust, take a nap.
-Environmental: enjoy an outdoor walk, enjoy the sunset, breathe in the fresh air, clean up you home
-Financial: begin a practical financial plan, try saving more, reduce unnecessary spending, think of where you can cut back, avoid using credit cards and be bold to ask for a raise.
-Professional : polish your resume, step out and apply for your dream job, learn a new trade, begin a side hustle you would enjoy and/or open your own business.
-Social: connect with friends and family and spend quality time with them, enjoy your moments together, volunteer, stay positive as you engage in healthy social media
-Spiritual: take moments in prayer, reflection, enjoy fellowship with others where you will be encouraged (find a church), help others in need and be open to extend love to others.
Our lives are meant to be enjoyed with balance and well-being. Let’s decide to maintain an intentional mindset to incorporate self-care daily. Reflect on the areas you may need to work on and begin to implement changes today. Let’s choose to improve our health by taking care of ourselves each day. I like to say very often, “Let’s not take anything for granted.”
Now tell me, are you making and keeping self-care as a priority daily? Do you take moments everyday to do something for yourself. Share your story and let’s continue to take moments together.
There is always another way.
Keep pressing on and find it.
