It’s interesting how invincible we tend to feel in our 20s. Late nights, endless cups of iced coffee, and long hours spent working without rest all seem so normal then. Somehow, we manage to wake up thinking, “I’m fine.” There’s a certain beauty in that season of life—a mix of energy and optimism that carries us through. But we rarely pause to think about how our choices might affect our future selves and even how it’s going to affect you when your older in your wallet . And yet, with time, our bodies have a gentle way of reminding us to slow down and take notice—almost as if to say, “Hey, remember me?”

One thing you hear when you’re young from older people is to take of yourself because you’re going to get those little reminders, like the back pain, the strain, those tiny aches, and they’re just going to keep adding up on and on for years.

Movement Just isn’t Optional

People seriously underestimate how much sitting they do. So, take a moment with me and consider these everyday examples that include lots of sitting: the work you do, scrolling, Netflix, driving, eating, etc. Basically, it can be considered like the default setting of adulthood. Even the people who say they’re “active” usually mean they went on a walk that one Sunday when the weather was nice.

Perhaps, not everyone is like that, but it’s very common. But here’s the thing that you absolutely need to keep in mind, your body doesn’t care how many hours you spent at the desk “being productive.” It just knows you haven’t moved. While you can ignore it for a time and maybe you can stretch once a week and call it balance. But those tight shoulders, stiff hips, and sore necks aren’t going anywhere. Basically, those problems are just quietly stacking up and one day you’ll wake up in your 30s, 40s, or beyond, and it could eventually be a struggle.

Sitting Can Basically Be Slow-Motion Self-Destruction

Although this sounds dramatic, it’s true. This may come as a surprise, but the human body wasn’t made for this much sitting. You’re not meant to melt into a chair all day long. Just remember this: the longer you stay still, the more your body forgets how to do the simple stuff. Your back tightens, your hips lock up, your core weakens, and the same can be said for your posture, too.

Those Years Catch Up Fast

The scary part is it all feels fine until it doesn’t, but it’s the reality, honestly. You hit your 30s and start noticing strange aches that weren’t there before, and while sure, sometimes it could be from sleeping wrong, that’s not always the case, though, it’s just aging and lack of movement most of the time.

So in order to prevent these very realistic (and very scary) issues in your 30s and 40s, you’ll need to do some preventative care. It’s honestly just some standard stuff, nothing fancy, like seeing a family chiropractor, doing more stretches throughout the day, and just moving more (ideally doing some exercising).

It’s Seriously Not too Late to Move

Some suggestions were just mentioned directly above, but even if you’re older than you’re 20s, that’s fine too, because it’s absolutely never too late, no matter your age, just do yourself a favor and start today.
