I want to begin with how honored I was to be given the press passes for Florida Supercon 2023 after applying. This was my first year attending and there were some things I really enjoyed and other things I believe need improvement. Let’s take a moment to discuss, “My Thoughts on Florida Supercon.”
Here are some things I really enjoyed:
There were some who take cosplay very seriously at comic cons and I found there is no difference at Florida Supercon. I particularly enjoyed the Star Wars cosplays and some from the Marvel and DC comics. You can tell these individuals planned how they would be in character as they wore these unique costumes. It was fun to watch.
Although the showroom was not as big as other conferences I have attended, they did include some interesting booths. I always like it when booths are doing giveaways and interactions. It is so much fun to participate. This showroom included stars on a map that laid out a variety of booths. Those with stars would do giveaways each day. It was like searching for treasures as you looked for each booth. Some gave some prizes for you coming by.
I had some fun moments at the Star Wars display area with the 501st legion and others.
Tucked in a corner was a unique booth with beautiful book lockets where I met the creator of Posh Geekery.
It was fun getting to meet some hair stylists representing Pereg Milano. They were offering a specific hair product that both straightened and curled. It definitely kept my hair nice and curly the rest of the day.
Also, included were times for signings and meeting some of your favorites in the industry.
I must admit there were not many panels that interested me. However, the few I attended were insightful and I was glad that I was able to be there. Some included seeing and hearing from the Shazam family. I appreciated Jack Dylan Grazer (Shazam! Fury of the Gods, IT, Luca) sharing his story of how from a child went into acting and why. He specifically stood out because he is humble as he talked about the acting space and how his mother was an important part of the journey.
I also appreciated attending a “Marketing Your Business Workshop” with Eddie Acevedo, the owner of Flynnsgaming He shared a lot of personal nuggets regarding marketing and growing your business. He was very personable and each who attended left with important knowledge that can help in a variety of businesses.
Another fun panel was attending comic artist John Beatty for both Marvel and DC. His panel was “How do you draw Captain America?” I really enjoy art and appreciated how he explained the way he would draw.
Here are some things that could be improved:
I did not feel as though there was enough security in place overall for Supercon. They could have done better for sure.
Although there were some fun things to enjoy on the showroom floor, they could have included so much more. There were not enough interactive displays and not enough comics in general in my opinion. I liked the Door Dash display, but it would have been a lot more fun if it was interactive. I did like getting a red bucket hat from Door Dash and being included in their story on social media.
Although I enjoyed a few panels, I would have liked to see more from Marvel Comics, DC, Star Wars, and even more. I understand it is a smaller comic con but there were many who did attend. I can honestly see this growing, and they need to plan on doing better with their guests and where they will be in the convention too.
Overall, I was glad to have the opportunity to attend for the Florida Supercon first time this year with a press pass. I was able to meet some great people and enjoy some fun moments while I was there. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to come.
