Goal Setting

Goal Setting

Why is goal setting important? Let’s think about this and be very honest here. Without goals, whether short-term or long-term, we may find ourselves wandering aimlessly and possibly wasting time doing the same things over and over again. Truth is we need to recognize this on our own as well as be open to when someone might point it out to us as a way of helping us. Goals propel us in a specific direction and can cause us to be motivated throughout the day. Let’s take a moment to discuss setting goals.

We each may be at various places currently in life with a desire for change and purpose to do more. To be successful in goal setting we must admit where we are and pay close attention to how we arrived there in order to move forward in reaching our goals. Surround yourself with individuals who are honest with you and whom you can be accountable to in bouncing things off of them on possible desires in forward movement and deeper direction.

Now if you are someone who already sets goals but have felt disappointed on not being able to reach them, perhaps it is time to be honest in your evaluation on what you are doing to have different results. Our inability to admit where we are wrong can hold us back in many ways. It’s important to not only admit there is more but also that there is an ability to do more. This by all means will require more on our part in order to reach the new goals that have been set. So the question remains, are we prepared to do more to acquire another level and reach new goals.

There was a moment a few years ago, I can remember when I really desired to run a ½ marathon at least once in my lifetime and so at the beginning of that year that became my goal to reach at some point in that same year. Not only did this require much of me to reach this goal but it caused me to study and research what I needed to do in order to attain it. What helped me was that my husband wanted to do this with me so we set this goal together. We would run and set times and goals to do more and more with each week and month. We also connected with other athletes who were runners and encouraged us in our training to prepare for this set goal. So the time came and December of that same year we ran together our first ½ marathon. This goal left such an incredible imprint for us both because we reached the goal we set at the beginning of that year although it seemed so difficult to reach.

Reaching new goals are possible for each of us. The important part is to set goals that are realistic. Whether you begin with a smaller goal and reach that first before you set larger and longer term goals, may be most important for you at this point. With all of this said, remember these are your goals you are setting. You are not to compare yourself with someone else who may have been able to acquire their goals faster and easier than yourself. Doing so may only cause you to feel inadequate and even possibly give you a sense to not try at all. Be amongst others who celebrate where you are as they cheer you on to the place where you are going. Surround yourself with those who have been able to do what you have wanted and who will encourage you to keep reaching for your goals as you make strides toward your next level. With all this said, begin now to set goals and keep moving forward.
